Petrified wood consists of fossil wood where all the organic materials have been replaced with minerals while retaining the original structure of the wood. The petrification process occurs underground, when wood becomes buried under sediment and is initially preserved due to a lack of oxygen. Mineral-rich water flowing through the sediment deposits its minerals in the plant`s cells, and as the plant`s lignin and cellulose decay away, a stone mold forms in its place. Petrified wood from Indonesia is from ancient teak (hardwood) trees that are approximately 20 million years old. Minerals present in the mud and water prior to and during the petrification process give it its color. This beautiful large slice of Indonesian petrified wood is polished on both front and back, so you can see all of Mother Nature`s fine artistry.
